Beautiful Somerset
A Portrait of a County
Including Bristol and Bath
A new book by Nigel Hicks about Somerset and the city of Bristol, southwest England.

Published in March 2020, Beautiful Somerset is the fourth book to be produced by Aquaterra Publishing, and the third in the ‘Portrait of a County’ series.
Exclusively using Nigel Hicks’s photography, Beautiful Somerset takes a photographic tour around both the county of Somerset and the adjoining city of Bristol. While the first chapter gives a summary of what the region has to offer, Chapters 2-6 provide a series of photo essays, each concentrating on a different area.
An outline of Beautiful Somerset
Chapter One gives a text-led overview of the Somerset and Bristol region, providing sections on their landscapes, wildlife, economy and tourism.
Chapter Two is a photo essay that concentrates on the Mendips, a range of rugged limestone hills across the centre of the county, which includes such places as Cheddar Gorge and the cathedral city of Wells.
Chapter Three focuses on the Levels, a huge low-lying area that includes such places as Glastonbury, numerous marshland nature reserves, the Bridgwater Carnival and the traditional willow industry.
Chapter Four showcases the magnificent landscapes of Exmoor National Park, or at least the main region that lies within Somerset. The photo essay here covers such high hills as Dunkery Beacon, coastal regions like Porlock Weir, and historic villages that include Bossington, Selworthy and Dunster.
Chapter Five is a photo essay that concentrates on Somerset’s south and southwest, taking in Taunton, the Quantock Hills, and such market towns as Chard, Castle Cary and Ilminster.
Chapter Six showcases the region’s urban centres, homing in on the cities of Bath and Bristol, the former with its Roman origins and Georgian architecture, the latter with its engineering, sea-faring and trading history.
